Pilates is an exercise method developed by Joseph Hubertus Pilates (1880-1967) which uses specially designed equipment as well as traditional mat work. Joseph Pilates originally designed his equipment for people recovering from illness and injury. This equipment has been adapted and developed over the years for the benefit of everyone. Pilates’ equipment is based on spring resistance rather than weights. That’s why Pilates equipment is completely different from the exercise machines that you might find in a gym and is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels Joseph Pilates called his method “The Art of Contrology” which refers to the way that the method encourages the use of the mind to control the muscles.
"Ideally our muscles should obey our will. Reasonably our will should not be dominated by the reflex action of our muscles." Joseph Pilates
