Frequently Asked Questions

Yes.  Personal training and Pilates exercise can be very effective in relieving back pain because it strengthens deep muscles that stabilize your spine, helps distribute forces along the spine and improves your posture, body mechanics and awareness.  Working with a personal trainer is the most effective way to achieve your goals!

We follow the National Academy of Sports Medicine's (NASM) integrated fitness training approach and scientifically researched, evidence based exercise program design. We offer a contemporary Pilates, Polestar Pilates training, that offers modifications based on the latest research in strengthening principles and rehabilitation.

Yes. Clients have seen an increase in bone density with a combination of weight bearing exercise, strength training and Pilates.  There is no current evidence that Pilates alone increases bone density. Persons with osteoporosis will avoid spine flexion exercises and end of range movement.  Strengthening is very important for spine health. The resistance provided by the Pilates equipment is essential, however resistance training and weight bearing exercise should be included in your Pilates program if you have osteopenia or osteoporosis.

Yes. Pilates specifically can really help improve the strength of your spine and avoid progression in your curves.  It promotes the elongation of your spine, strengthens stabilizers, expands your ribcage in the right places, and improves your posture. Some precautions to consider are avoiding spine flexion exercises in the thoracic spine (rib cage area) and end range side bending or rotation. There are many Pilates exercises that are beneficial for clients with scoliosis and many report a significant improvement in their quality of life.  If you have pain during exercise due to scoliosis, we will refer you to a Physical Therapist first before starting your fitness training.
